The trippin’ Casting Couch…

Casting trippin’ was quite the production.  We held live auditions in Mishawaka, Indiana, Chicago and Cleveland and we also accepted video auditions from all over the world.  dennis_farina1246930973cast pixI was receiving about 50 e-mails a day for the better part of 6 weeks and I responded to each and every one personally.

It’s a lot of work, but I highly recommend it. You can weed out a lot of scary folks just by their e-mail correspondence. My favorite was the guy who kept mentioning his father was Dennis Farina, then quickly saying, “but don’t bring my father into this because I’m only interested in being cast because of my acting and not because of my connections.”  Dude, then why  bring it up every chance you get?  Jeez.

We sat through over 300 live auditions seeing every imaginable variation of our characters.  We watched endless video auditions as well. We could have made a million different movies from all the choices.

By late May we’d narrowed it down to 4 actors per character and held callbacks at our place in Indiana, each with an entirely different cast.   Callbacks were made up of some improvs I based around the script and table reads, though I probably learned just as much from interacting with everybody on our lunch break.

We had a couple choices for each character, but our first choices were clear as we watched the video footage from the callbacks.  Fortunately, all of our first choices accepted their roles.  We were cast!  And we soon formed a family of sorts, albeit a slightly incestuous one…
