comic-con 2011 post screening drinksWow!  This may just be our best Comic-Con ever.  It’s our fourth time to screen here and, admittedly, I came with mixed feelings.  It’s such a madhouse and I have so much work piling up (not to mention pending jury duty next week – d’oh!).  I wasn’t sure it was the best choice to come, but that changed the moment we arrived. Despite the hundred thousand+ people, it seemed every time I turned around, I ran into an old friend.  Old connections were renewed and new connections felt like old friends in an instant.  Oh, right – THIS is the magic of Comic-Con.  DOLORES enjoyed her best screening yet Friday night.  The most enthusiastic applause erupted on the last frame of the film and Q&A was too fun.  Such great response from the crowd and we had lines of folks wanting to talk to us after.  People were shocked by our budget, convinced it was far higher.  We promoted filmmaking in the Midwest with heartfelt pride.I was so proud of our Deviant family in general.  Thanks, Guys – for teamwork so well done!  Our little movie’s seriously getting around.  We also announced trippin’s imminent release to great response, so I suppose we should at least let this much of the cat out of the bag… We have indeed signed a distribution deal about which we’re very pleased.  Details are forthcoming.  It’s particularly nifty as it’s a multi-tiered deal.  Suffice to say for now, I believe we’ve found the perfect home for our baby and then some (there are some fun surprises attached…)

4773806768_f80623e765_mSpeaking of trippin’, she’s to screen at two more fests – BUTFF in the Netherlands(!) – how cool is that? and the fab Buffalo Screams Fest in NY, which I sadly have not been able to check out yet, nor will I again this year.  Sigh.  Sometimes I envy our films their fun destinations when we cannot follow.   Other times, I’m grateful she drags me from my work sanctuary where I’ve spent far too time of late.

Thanks, Comic-Con for helping me rediscover your magic.  It had begun to feel more like work the last time, but this trip’s reminded me of the first time we came for a screening.  It was the week before we were to shoot trippin’, which was thoroughly irresponsible of us.  Nonetheless, it was just what the doctor ordered.  I’d spend mornings in the hotel reworking storyboards, shot lists and the shooting schedule, afternoons at the convention and fest and nighttime shmoozing in the Gaslamp district meeting all sorts of wonderful people.  I’d left feeling all warm and fuzzy about films and filmmaking, which is precisely where one needs to be when about to shoot for 16 days straight for 18 hours a day and super limited resources.  What a weird, wonderful journey it’s been! Next stop:  Martinis in Hell with the Prince of Darkness himself…
