The audition was exciting for me on a personal and professional level. I remember walking into that little classroom at Columbia, thinking how strange it was to be back there. (I got my Bachelor’s at Columbia). I had been digesting the sides and “improv” for weeks, and was thrilled about the opportunity to audition for Mickey. I was thoroughly impressed with Devi’s creation of this multifaceted, interesting, complex woman. I had never come across a character before that I was so eager to get to know. So, when I walked into that room and saw Devi and Augustín and a video camera, I had to just shut my brain off and jump in. I can honestly say that I put my all into that audition and let go of any thoughts that I might look entirely ridiculous. This was a huge turning point for me because I had never completely let myself go like that before.
When Devi called me for the second audition at her house, I remember being so elated that I didn’t even care if I got the part- I was just so happy to be invited to the callback! Then I got to meet everyone and everything flowed so well. Things just seemed to snap into place and it felt like we were our characters already. The whole pre-production experience was amazing because Devi had this great way of getting us all involved. We were given free-reign to help create our characters on every level- by giving input on what our characters would wear, what kinds of things we’d surround ourselves with, what music we’d listen to, etc.
