bendfilmfestivalposter2008tower2Bend is AMAZING – why doesn’t everybody live here?  Perfect autumn weather, super cool people and the town is idyllic.  I am staying with the nicest host family ever in their breathtakingly gorgeous home on Kansas Street (there truly is no place like home).  They’ve put me up in my own wing of paradise – 4 poster bed, private bath, view of trees out the window – and so peaceful.  Cindy, my delightful hostess even left a crystal pitcher of water and glass on the nightstand accompanied by a dish of fancy chocolates and mixed nuts.  Too sweet!  Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Los Feliz anymore…Now if only I can get them to adopt me…

wardrobejen & vince smThe fest is off to a great start.  The main theater is a beautiful 2-block stroll through the park away.  I’ve met a number of other cool filmmakers already.  Best of all, remember orange suit dude at the SLC airport yesterday?  He’s part of the fest!  Had drinks with him last night. He’s the subject of a documentary playing here – Vincent: A Life in Color directed by Jennifer Burns, whom I suspect shall become a lasting friend as well – go figure.

plympton 1smbigfoot smI also finally met Bill Plympton in person – I’ve enjoyed his animated films for as long as I’ve been doing the fest circuit.  He’s super nice and even drew me a cartoon!  Oh, and I spotted Big Foot at the fabulous catered party last night.  Even he has a film screening here.

After party #1, they screened 3 great movies, which I’ll have to review when time permits (when will there ever be enough time?)   Then it was off to party #2.  I slept like the dead by the time I got home.  Now I must get washed and dressed as we have a meeting with the press – local TV and newspapers are expected.  This town clearly takes their fest seriously.  Banners for the fest hang everywhere and the screenings and parties were packed.  I so hope trippin’ gets in next year. I simply must come back.
