A Quick Memo From Cannes

ciff family 2 smI cannot believe how fast this has all gone.  Tonight is closing night at CIFF and I can’t believe it’s already ending.  Time has never flown by faster in my life. There has been no time to break, or blog, or reflect – it’s just been this non-stop amazing, magical journey.  I’ve jotted some notes of highlights of each day and many of us here have taken photos – (though not nearly enough – it’s hard to remember to snap photos when every moment is so stimulating) to attempt to capture glimpses of it.  So I will write with a full account of things we’ve learned, experienced and been inspired by as soon as time permits – but it would be wrong to leave this moment to do so now.  Tonight I must celebrate films, food and friends at the closing night party.

margaritas smOne thing I can say is that I cannot recommend the Cannes Independent Film Festival more highly.  It is the perfect way to pop one’s Cannes cherry (pardon my vulgarity, but it’s an apt metaphor I assure you) in a fun, supportive and educational environment.  I  can think of no better way to come here for the first time to learn about this crazy industry, market and splendid chaos.  This so seriously rocks, there are simply no words to begin to describe it – but I promise I will make the attempt upon my return in a couple of days.  on the croisette smI have learned so very much and feel obliged to share the wealth of new knowledge with my indie filmmaking peers.  The good news is we really CAN do what we want – think global – it’s how dreams are made.

Now a pitcher of sangria and poolside filmmaker chat beckons before the next screenings.  Rumor has it a BBQ rabbit stew will be among tonight’s delicacies consumed in our communal feast – SWEET! And in case there was any remaining doubt – yes, by all means enter this fest next year – you owe it to your indie filmmaking aspirations!
